Each term at Burlington Junior School, the children take part in a poetry reading competition. The poems or extracts are picked for their relevance to our current topic. This term the children have been learning about William Shakespeare and were given poems, songs or extracts to recite in front of the rest of the school. His poems are notoriously difficult to learn, due to the Old English used and children not being familiar with it. The standard was very high again, with all the classes scoring similar points. However a clear winner emerged with Class 5 giving a wonderful performance of ‘The Witches Song’. Runners up were Class 10 with their performance of an extract of ‘To be or not to be’ from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
